If antibiotics are used too often for things they can't treat--like colds or other viral infections--they can stop working effectively against bacterial when you or your child really needs them.

Antibiotic resistance--when antibiotics can no longer cure bacterial infections--has been a concern for years and is considered one of the world's most critical public health threats. CDC efforts have resulted in fewer children receiving unnecessary antibiotics in recent years.
We stress dental implants for a very good reason: when teeth are removed, half of the bone around them melts away in the year following extraction. Over time, bone loss distorts your appearance, which is obviously something you don't want and we don't want. Implants are the best way to keep bone loss from occurring and altering how you look!

Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in the popular pain reliever Tylenol. According to the FDA, formulations that contain more than 325mg of acetaminophen (some formulations have 500mg or 650mg per pill) have not been shown to relieve pain better than lower doses of the medication, and, in addition, high levels of the drug can cause damage to the liver, the organ responsible for metabolizing the drug.

Acetaminophen is in over 600 medications, most of which are over the counter, and therefore easily ingested in amounts that exceed the daily recommended dosage. Common OTC brands that contain the drug include Benedryl, Excedrin, Nyquil, Robitussin, Theraflu and Vicks.

For adults, the limit is 4,000mg daily, but a total of 3,000mg daily is better, and those of lower body weight should stay at the lower end of the range. Drinking alcohol causes the liver to convert more of the acetaminophen taken into toxic byproducts. When taking the drug, men should have no more than two standard drinks per day, women no more than a single drink of alcohol.

Christie Brinkley is 61 years old, but looks much younger! And we all know someone who looks a lot older than they really are.

In the initial interview and examination of patients, a medical and dental history is discussed, and we always make an assessment of what a patient's apparent age is in relation to their chronological age. Those patients who look, act and feel younger than their actual age usually respond more favorably and often more quickly to treatment.

New research is showing that "ageism" is affecting the treatment of cancer patients. The data suggests that some elderly oncology patients are being under-treated because of their age. The studies assert that older patients with several different tumor types (including rectal, prostate, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma) are not receiving optimal care because they are being judged by their chronological age rather than by their overall level of fitness.

These findings are suggested by retrospective analysis of 14,909 patients using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database, and other studies of thousands of patients, all of which show lack of preoperative radiotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy in the treatment of patients over the age of 55. This lack of optimal care reduces their survival rates.
When your tummy rumbles, instead of reaching for a bag of
chips, grab some veggie sticks or slice up an apple! We understand the convenience of snack foods
as well as the deal you get when purchasing a bulk pack. But most of these things lack nutritional

Postmenopausal women who are metabolically healthy but overweight do not have the same increased risk of breast cancer as those who are overweight with high insulin levels. One of the first studies that examined the association between insulin and breast cancer looked at data from 2,830 participants in the Women's Health Initiative, 497 of whom had breast cancer. They compared the insulin sensitivity of those of normal weight and overweight, and used the fasting insulin level to define metabolic health. The study found that metabolically healthy overweight women were not at elevated risk of breast cancer compared with metabolically healthy normal weight women.

Peri-implantitis is a more serious disease distinguishable from the condition of peri-implant mucositis. It is characterized by an inflammatory process around a dental implant, which includes both soft tissue inflammation and progressive loss of supporting bone beyond biological bone remodeling. It is present when there is bleeding on probing and/or suppuration and detectable bone loss. Since after all dental implants are placed the bone undergoes a process of remodeling that results in the loss of an average of 1 mm of bone height, the only way to document further bone loss is by comparison to a baseline radiograph obtained at the time of suprastructure placement, or by (if no baseline radiograph is present) using a threshold vertical distance of 2 mm from the expected marginal bone level following remodeling post implant placement.

Risk factors include:

previous periodontal disease--does not affect implant survival rate, but is a more frequent finding in patients with a history of periodontitis

poor plaque control or difficulty cleaning due to prosthesis design dictated by esthetics, phonetics and function

residual cement that provides a positive environment for bacterial attachment

smoking--a 3.6 to 4.6 times greater risk of inflammation

genetic factors that contribute to patient susceptibility

diabetes--which affects tissue repair ability and defense against inflammation

possible bite overload

Diagnosis of peri-implantitis:

The presence of bone loss and probing depth alone is not enough to make the diagnosis. Only in the presence of bacterial inflammation, is bone loss, seen over time, definitive for peri-implantitis. Non-surgical therapy has not been shown to be effective in the treatment of the disease, therefore surgical intervention is necessary, and there are several ways to do it. An understanding of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis underscores the importance of regular monitoring and professional care for dental implants as well as for natural teeth.
The latest Lupus Foundation Newsletter from www.lupus.org has a Q&A with Dr. Hazel Breland regarding exercise and Lupus.

What is Lupus?

Lupus is an autoimmune disease characterized by, among other things, fatigue and joint pain. It is a disease that alters a person's lifestyle. Lupus patients are very aware of the limitations the disease creates and therefore are doubly motivated to do things even when they don't feel well. There are good days and bad, and some patients don't know how they will feel on any given day until they wake up in the morning. They also don't want to do anything that may cause the disease to "flare."

The consensus regarding exercise is that, with the approval of the patient's physician, a program that involves low impact motions, such as yoga, Tai Chi, water aerobics, a stationary bike, or walking, are best. Staying hydrated during exercise is also important. Exercises that promote staying limber and maintaining range of motion are recommended.

Patients are encouraged to stay active and at the same time pay attention to their tolerance levels to get the most benefit without overdoing it.
Previous studies have shown that (caffeinated) coffee consumption may reduce the risk of non-melanoma skin cancers. A new study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute of 447,000 people from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study, followed patients for a period of ten years from 1996. All were cancer free at the beginning, and researcher adjusted for various risk factors, such as UV radiation exposure, age, alcohol intake, sex, smoking history, physical activity, and body mass index. Results showed that those who drank 4 or more cups of coffee per day had a 20% lower risk of melanoma.

Blood type may affect brain function as we age, according to a new large, long-term study. People with the rare AB blood type, present in less than 10 percent of the population, have a higher than usual risk of cognitive problems as they age.

University of Vermont hematologist Mary Cushman and her colleagues used data from a national study called REGARDS, which has been following 30,239 African-American and Caucasian individuals older than 45 since 2007. The aim of the study is to understand the heavy stroke toll seen in the southeastern U.S., particularly among African-Americans. Cushman's team focused on information collected twice yearly via phone surveys that evaluate cognitive skills such as learning, short-term memory and executive function. The researchers zeroed in on 495 individuals who showed significant declines on at least two of the three phone survey tests.

When they compared that cognitively declining group with 587 participants whose mental muster remained robust, researchers found that impairment in thinking was roughly 82 percent more likely in individuals with AB blood type than in those with A, B or O blood types, even after taking their race, sex and geography into account. The finding was published online last September in Neurology.

The seemingly surprising result has some precedent: past studies suggest non-O blood types are linked to elevated incidence of heart disease, stroke and blood clots—vascular conditions that could affect brain function. Yet these cardiovascular consequences are believed to be linked to the way non-O blood types coagulate, which did not seem to contribute to the cognitive effects described in the new study. The researchers speculate that other blood-group differences, such as how likely cells are to stick to one another or to blood vessel walls, might affect brain function.

Cushman emphasizes the need for follow-up studies not only to verify the blood type/brain function association but also to untangle mechanisms for it. In the meantime, those with AB blood need not panic about their future cognitive wherewithal, she says, noting that all our brains are apt to benefit from a healthy diet, awareness of our risk factors for heart disease and stroke, and regular exercise for the body and brain.
—Andrea Anderson

From Blood to Brain
Blood type has been linked with a variety of mental disorders, but the associations are weak—many other factors are more important in determining who ends up with an illness. Still, the fact that a connection may exist intrigues some scientists, who hope one day to uncover the biological processes that link blood molecules to mental health, possibly improving our understanding and treatment of these illnesses.

People with O blood type may be more likely to have depression and intense anxiety; children may be at a greater risk of attention-deficit disorder.

People with A blood type may be more prone to obsessive-compulsive disorder; children may be at a greater risk of attention-deficit disorder.

Children with B blood type may have a lower risk of attention-deficit disorder.

Well-fitting Dentures

When teeth are removed, our jawbone begins a continuous, lifelong process of resorption, or shrinkage. The pressure from dentures on gum tissues contribute to the shrinkage, since gum tissues were never intended to withstand chewing forces. High quality, well-fitting dentures restore your youthful appearance, allow you to eat most of the foods that you love, helps you feel better about yourself, eliminates embarrassment, enables you to speak more clearly and even helps with digestion.

Loose Dentures

If you've worn the same set of dentures for a long time, your ridges have shrunk. As a result, your bite has become closed down, and your lips and cheeks have less support from the teeth than they once did. Since a set of dentures is made to fit the shape of your oral anatomy at the time they are made, often you don't notice the gradual shrinkage as gums and bone recede. Your dentures become looser and more unstable, affecting speaking and chewing. The collapsed "denture look" develops, when before nobody knew you were wearing dentures.

If this is you, it's time to get your smile back with a new set of dentures. The new set will make you look better and feel younger, speak more clearly and enhance your chewing ability.

Mediterranean Diet

Researchers studied more than 22,000 participants over an eleven year time period. They then took those who had developed type 2 diabetes and monitored their dietary habits. The researchers constructed a 10-point "Mediterranean Diet Score" (MDS) and a similar scale to measure the available carbohydrate (or glycemic load (GL)) of the diet.

A Mediterranean diet features the use of extra virgin olive oil, which leads to a high ratio of monounsaturated fats to saturated fatty acids. The diet recommends fish and lean meats, whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, and nuts.

MDS Score vs. GL Score

People with an MDS score of over 6 were 12% less likely to develop diabetes than those with a score of 3 or below. Those with the highest available carbohydtrate in their diet were 21% more likely to develop diabetes than those with the lowest. Those people with both high MDS and low GL had a 20% less chance of developing type 2 diabetes. In addition, they found that it was the dietary characteristics, according to these two measures, rather than gross weight (or overweight) that was significant.

Cold sores usually clear up without treatment. In the meantime, the following may provide relief:

topical ointments: lidocaine, or benzocaine (Zilactin over the counter) can help ease discomfort

benzocaine should not be used in children younger than 2 years without a doctor's approval

adults should use the recommended dose only

Oral antiviral medications

may shorten the duration of the sores and decrease pain if started early

include: acyclovir (Zovirax), Famcyclovir (Famvir), and Valacyclovir (Valtrex)

may also be prescribed to prevent recurrence for those who experience them frequently, experience related illness during an outbreak or have indentifable triggers, such as intense sunlight

over the counter pain relievers may help

ice or warm compresses to the blisters may ease pain

Most important: let it heal without squeezing, pinching or picking at any blister.

Dentures Care

Careful daily removal of the bacterial and fungal biofilm present in the mouth and on complete dentures is important to minimize denture inflammation (stomatitis) and to help contribute to good oral and general health. The latest evidence in the literature recommends that patients who wear dentures should do the following:

Daily cleansing by soaking is superior to denture creams and pastes and less abrasive

Denture cleansers should be used only outside the mouth

Dentures should be thoroughly rinsed after cleaning before reinsertion into the mouth

Dentures should never be placed in boiling water, because they will warp

Dentures can be soaked in diluted bleach solutions but only for 10 minutes or less

Your local Board Certified Prosthodontist (denture specialist) can help you with your dentures.
Can you tell if you're having a stroke? A stroke occurs when the blood supply of part of your brain is
interrupted or severely reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and food. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. A stroke is a medical emergency and therefore prompt treatment is crucial. Early action can minimize damage and complications. The good news is that they can be treated and

Stroke signs
How do you know if you or someone else is having a stroke? You may have have trouble walking, stumble, feel dizzy or lose balance or coordination. You may have trouble with speaking and understanding, slurring or an inability to find the right words to explain what you feel. You may experience sudden paralysis or numbness on one side of your body or face. See if you can raise and hold both arms above your head. You may have sudden blurred or blackened vision or may see

double. You may have a sudden very severe headache.

Types of strokes

The most common (90%) type of stroke is the ischemic stroke--caused by blockage in an artery. A mini-stroke--a transient ischemic attack (TIA)--is a brief episode of symptoms caused by a temporary blockage, and requires medical attention also. Strokes are more prevalent with a personal or family history of heart disease, being age 55 or older, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, being overweight or obese, binge drinking or cocaine and methamphetamine use. Emergency treatment is directed at restoring blood flow to the brain. Further measures can be undertaken to reduce the risk of further strokes. After that, care focuses on helping you regain your strength, recover as much function as possible and return to independent living.

Knowing your stroke risk factors, following your doctor's recommendations and adopting a healthy lifestyle are the best steps you can take to prevent a stroke.

Prediabetes

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 1/3 of adults in the United States has prediabetes: 79 million Americans, half of all Americans aged 65 years or older, and that 15% to 30% of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years.

If these risk factors apply to you, seek medical attention:

age 45 or older

overweight

family history of diabetes--parent or sibling

background--African-American; Hispanic/Latino, American-Indian, Asian-American or Pacific Islander

history of diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes) or giving birth to a baby weighing 9 pounds or more

physical activity less than three times per week

Early diagnosis and treatment and lifestyle changes can prevent serious medical consequences.
Since January is the time for New Year's resolutions, and some may not have been kept after only a couple of weeks, it's never too late to quit smoking.

More than any lifestyle choice a person can make, quitting cigarettes will have the most positive impact on general health status. This is what happens after quitting:

20 minutes after stopping smoking, the heart rate becomes normal

12 hours after stopping, the carbon monoxide level in the blood drops to normal

2 to 3 weeks after stopping, coughing and shortness of breath decreases

1 year after stopping, the added risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker's

5 to 15 years after stopping, the chance of death by lung cancer is reduced to half of what it was when smoking

The National Cancer Institute's website at www.smokefree.gov provides science-driven tools, information, and support for those who quit. It has state and national resources, free materials, and quitting advice from NCI.
Prosthodontists come up with some novel techniques:

If you wear dentures, one of the ways to keep your gums healthy, is to massage them to maintain generous circulation, and "toughen" them at the same time.

Try this: get old fashioned bubble gum and put a few squares in your mouth, at the same time, with your dentures out. When the gum has reached its softened stage, chew the big ball of gum all around your mouth. The gum will provide the benefit of the massaging, and you'll also feel like a kid again!
The bone around tooth roots is a special kind of bone: alveolar bone. It receives stimulation from the roots of the teeth it encloses. Alveolar bone is healthy unless subject to inflammation from periodontal (gum) disease which causes it to recede, or if the forces of chewing are greater than the capacity of the bone to withstand. The full-mouth series of radiographs above clearly shows some teeth, and some segments of teeth, to have significantly reduced levels of bone. The one universal truth about alveolar bone is that it resorbs (shrinks) when teeth are removed, because the bone loses its stimulation.

The best thing about dental implants is that they preserve bone. Placed as soon as possible after tooth loss, the implants stimulate the bone in the same way natural tooth roots used to. This means that possible dental implants should ideally included in the treatment plan before teeth are extracted. A CT Scan can be used with dental imaging software to determine the exact location, size and number of implants needed. By preserving bone, dental implants counteract the results of tooth loss and aging, and help control facial changes. They give the security of knowing things will stay in place when you eat, talk and smile. They contribute to your comfort, quality of life, and self esteem.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults born during 1945-1965 should receive one-time testing for the hepatitis C virus (HCV). For these reasons:

National data show this age group has a 5 times higher prevalence of the infection than other adults, and the age group makes us 75% of all those who have the disease

HCV is the leading cause of liver transplants and liver cancer

A high proportion of those infected are unaware

Treatment can halt disease progression and provide a virologic cure in most infected persons

As reported in Cancer Therapy Advisor, research by the Center for Behavioral Epidemiology and Community Health at San Diego State University states that the belief that hookah smoke is not harmful is simply untrue.

They found that, despite the fact that hookah is filtered through water before inhalation, people who smoke hookah have a fourfold elevation in urine levels of S-phenylmercapturic acid (SPMA), a metabolite on benzene, and there is also a twofold elevation in those who attend an event in a hookah lounge.

This significant increase in the uptake of benzene, a chemical substance associated with an increased risk for leukemia, was published in a study in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.
