Antibiotics Aren't Always The Answer

Colds and many other upper respiratory infections, as well as some ear infections, are caused by viruses, not bacteria.  If antibiotics are used too often for things they can't treat--like colds or other viral infections--they can stop working effectively  against bacterial when you or your child really needs them.

Antibiotic resistance--when antibiotics can no longer cure bacterial infections--has been a concern for years and is considered one of the world's most critical public health threats.  CDC efforts have resulted in fewer children receiving unnecessary antibiotics in recent years.

Implants Keep Bone Loss From Occurring and Altering How You Look

We stress dental implants for a very good reason:  when teeth are removed, half of the bone around them melts away in the year following extraction.  Over time, bone loss distorts your appearance, which is obviously something you don't want and we don't want.  Implants are the best way to keep bone loss from occurring and altering how you look!

Acetaminophen Safety/Dangers

Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in the popular pain reliever Tylenol.  According to the FDA, formulations that contain more than 325mg of acetaminophen (some formulations have 500mg or 650mg per pill) have not been shown to relieve pain better than lower doses of the medication, and, in addition, high levels of the drug can cause damage to the liver, the organ responsible for metabolizing the drug.

Acetaminophen is in over 600 medications, most of which are over the counter, and therefore easily ingested in amounts that exceed the daily recommended dosage.  Common OTC brands that contain  the drug include Benedryl, Excedrin, Nyquil, Robitussin, Theraflu and Vicks.

For adults, the limit is 4,000mg daily, but a total of 3,000mg daily is better, and those of lower body weight should stay at the lower end of the range.  Drinking alcohol causes the liver to convert more of the acetaminophen taken into toxic byproducts.  When taking the drug, men should have no more than two standard drinks per day, women no more than a single drink of alcohol.

Chronological Age vs. Apparent Age

Christie Brinkley is 61 years old, but looks much younger!  And we all know someone who looks a lot older than they really are.

In the initial interview and examination of patients, a medical and dental history is discussed, and we always make an assessment of what a patient's apparent age is in relation to their chronological age.  Those patients who look, act and feel younger than their actual age usually respond more favorably and often more quickly to treatment.

New research is showing that "ageism" is affecting the treatment of cancer patients.  The data suggests that some elderly oncology patients are being under-treated because of their age.  The studies assert that older patients with several different tumor types (including rectal, prostate, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma) are not receiving optimal care because they are being judged by their chronological age rather than by their overall level of fitness.

These findings are suggested by retrospective analysis of 14,909 patients using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database, and other studies of thousands of patients, all of which show lack of preoperative radiotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy in the treatment of patients over the age of 55.  This lack of optimal care reduces their survival rates.

Our Office is CPR Pro Certified in Advanced Life Support!

Our entire office, all personnel, routinely renew their certification in advanced life support.  This entails learning and understanding any new rules and regulations regarding CPR, demonstrating techniques on models and taking and passing a practical and written examination.

When we say we are trained in advanced life support, that includes adult, child and infant CPR, and training with our automated external defibrillator.

Five Important Medical Tests You Need To Take

Julie Chen, MD, in To Your Health, suggests these top five tests to see if you are generally healthy:
  • comprehensive metabolic panel--a blood test to assess electrolyte and mineral levels, and liver and kidney function
  • complete blood count--checks platelets, red and white blood cells
  • lipid panel--checks cholesterol and triglyceride levels
  • fasting glucose level--checks sugar levels
  • thyroid panel--TSH levels for thyroid function, sometimes T3 and T4 also
These tests monitor your health status, and if you are taking any vitamins or medications, are recommended on a yearly basis.

How Focusing on These 3 Points Will Help You Spring Out of the Winter Blues!

Happy Spring 2015

As we move out of winter, you may be changing your frame of mind from “Snuggly winter days…” to “Time for spring cleaning!” Have you ever considered a dental spring cleaning?  If you can spring clean your home, why not your teeth?!  Here are three easy points to focus on:
1.       Healthy eating
2.       Tooth care
3.       Dental check-up

Healthy Eating

When your tummy rumbles, instead of reaching for a bag of chips, grab some veggie sticks or slice up an apple!  We understand the convenience of snack foods as well as the deal you get when purchasing a bulk pack.  But most of these things lack nutritional value and do not fare well on your body, health or mouth.  Create a goal to reach for a healthy snack to fill the nutritional craving your body is after.  Your waistline and teeth will thank you!

Foods that are high in sugar wreak havoc on your teeth contribute to the start of cavities.  Food consistency also plays a role in oral health. Very hard foods can harm the surfaces of your teeth, and there’s also the potential to cause significant damage by cracking or chipping a tooth!

Tooth Care

·         Are you attentively brushing your teeth twice a day for 2-minutes?
·         Are you flossing daily (or at all)?
·         Have you changed your toothbrush in the last 3 months?

When brushing your teeth spend the full 2 minutes taking care to cover the front and back of each individual tooth. Before finishing up – give your tongue a once over as well! Many toothbrushes have a built in tongue brusher on the back of the toothbrush head.  Toothbrushes do wear out.  They can fray and lose the sturdiness to properly clean your teeth.  Toothbrushes should be replaced about every three months.

Flossing

Flossing cleans about 40% of your teeth surfaces.  Remember to reach your very back teeth.  Flossing helps to lessen plaque build-up and helps prevent gum disease.

Dental Check-up

Remember how great your mouth feels after a dental cleaning in our office?  Now that the holidays have come to a close, your teeth may be in need of a professional cleaning.  Call us for a dental check-up and cleaning.  Check-ups are recommended every 6 months unless you are experiencing a problem area in your mouth.  And, if that is the case, call us as soon as possible.  Whenever you are in pain or have a question, call us.

Now that you have these things fresh on your mind, you are ready to take charge of spring!  And you can do so with a bright shining and CLEAN smile!
