Nitrous oxide-oxygen is a gas used for
sedation during dental procedures to help fearful and anxious patients relax. It has been used for 170 years and has been proven safe and effective. We have a nitrous oxide-oxygen delivery
system in our office and it is available for the convenience of all patients. The gas has a high margin of safety due to at
least twelve significant features that have been developed. These include color
coded tanks and hose connections, and an emergency air inlet when the oxygen
fail-safe system turns the gases off. A minimum oxygen liter flow at all times
of 2.5 to 3.0 liters of oxygen per minute ensures the patient always has access
to 100% oxygen when the machine is turned on. The system also does not allow
the concentration of oxygen to fall below 30% when nitrous oxide gas is added
to the oxygen. The fail-safe system turns off the nitrous oxide supply
automatically when oxygen delivery is compromised or depleted. The availability of this service is one more
way in which we strive to create an environment for patient comfort and safety.
