Maintain Regular Cleanings and ExamsThe just published Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry (JPD) Oct., 2011, includes its annual review of scientific literature. In the implant section, 2010 literature is referenced that shows that periimplantitis (inflammation around implants with bleeding or suppuration on probing, probing depth of more than 5mm or progressive bone loss) is typically a condition of late onset, meaning can occur more than 5 years after implant placement. Since these infections can occur after many successful years of service, it is clearly important to maintain a regular regimen of dental cleanings and examinations long after placement!
