Periodontal Disease at an Alarming Rate
The American Academy of Peridontology
(AAP) was recently invited to provide testimony to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention's Division of Oral Health (CDCDOH) as part of the
strategic planning prcess for 2011 through 2014. The goal is to develop a
surveillance program to determine the incidence and prevalence of periodontal disease in the US population. An initial
study indicates that the incidence of periodontal disease may be two to three
times higher than previous estimates. This is important because of the growing body
of research that links periodontal disease to other disease states, such as
cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The testimony recommends promoting public
awareness of periodontal disease prevalence in the US and the importance of
periodontal health in achieving overall health.
