Liposuction Details

Ideal Candidate for Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure.  A suction tube is inserted under the skin to remove fat from specific areas (abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms or neck) and contour those areas.  The ideal candidate is a person who has a stable body weight, but has too much body fat in certain spots.  It is best performed on healthy patients without heart disease, diabetes, immune system problems or circulation problems.  It is not a weight loss alternative.  That is better achieved through diet and exercise or bariatric procedures.

Reduce the Number of Fat Cells

The principle of liposuction is that reducing the number of fat cells negates the effect of the increased size and volume of fat cells caused by weight gain.  The amount removed depends upon the appearance of the area and the volume of fat.  As long as weight remains stable, the results are permanent.  Patients with good skin tone and elasticity will find the skin contours smoothly to the treated areas.  However, most surgeons cannot guarantee to be able to correct dimpling or stretch marks.

Recovery

Ask your doctor about how you will be expected to heal--if there can be any anticipated pain, swelling, bruising, contour irregularities or numbness during or after the usual weeks of recovery.  Final contours may even take months.
